 WITS

        On October 11th and 12th over ninety gifted and talented students participated in the WITS (Writers in the Schools) Program at the cooperative. Two graduate students, Hung Pham and Josh Peterson, from the creative writing department at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, conducted classes for two days inspiring students to write poetry. Some of the poems will be published in the annual Writers in the Schools Anthology. Thanks to the students, teachers, and G/T coordinators who participated. We look forward to seeing the published poems. 

NAGC

       Several gifted and talented coordinators were able to attend the National Association for Gifted Children conference in New Orleans in November. Linor Thomas, the GT Coordinator from Quitman, made a presentation at the conference about Advanced Placement in Rural Schools. There were numerous opportunities to meet national researchers in the field of gifted education and to learn about current research in the field. The conference included keynotes by Bill Nye the science guy and the blue dog painter. Next year's conference will be held in Denver, CO.

    Highlights from 2010-2011

       The 2010-2011 year got off to a busy start with two-day workshops in Strategies for Pre-AP Math and Strategies for Pre-AP English and Social Studies. July also included a great workshop on economics with excellent curricular materials.  The year continued with additional workshops, meetings, conferences, student activities, and preparation for monitoring.

On November 2nd and 3rd over seventy gifted and talented students participated in the WITS (Writers in the Schools) Program at the cooperative. Congratulations to the nine school districts that received Advance Placement Materials and Equipment grants. The Districts received seventeen grants for over $15,000.

The Y.E.S. (Youth Entrepreneur Showcase) team from Atkins (Betsy Hayes, G/T Coordinator) received a plaque for being in the top 25 or 175 YES teams. They also received 3rd place for innovation. Congratulations!

Annual AGATE Conference 

Governor Mike Beebe was the keynote speaker for the Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education 32nd Annual Conference, February 16-18th.

Numerous awards and honors were distributed to Gifted and Talented teachers and parents from the Arch Ford Cooperative area at the conference.

The Award of Excellence went to Donna Whiting, Conway School District.

Tanya Leggett, Greenbrier School District was honored with the Parent Community Award.

The Educator Award went to Julie Haynes, Conway School District.

The Curriculum - Elementary Division with an ADM less than 1000 was awarded to Penny Laymon, Atkins School District.

Vickie Bailey, Conway School District, and Julianna Yeatman, East End School District, were AGATE MAP recipients. Julianna also received a scholarship from AGATE. Heather Story of South Side Elementary, Bee Branch, also received a scholarship.

         

Kathy Whittington and Betsy Hays of the Atkins School District won a 2010 Curriculum Award for “Landmark Links: From Research to Restoration.”                                                                                          

Kolby Snellenberger, Russellville School District, won a 2010 Curriculum Award for “Team Based Learning.”

Charlotte Norberg, South Conway County School District; Starla Gresham, Anna Parks, Melissa Lovelady, Kelli Gordon, Julie Haynes, Conway School District; Jeana Williams and Sherry Williams, Greenbrier School District were presenters at the conference.

In the Act 56 Awards for Outstanding Programs, Atkins School District was recognized for merit in districts of less than 1000.

An AGATE Affiliate Award went to South Conway County School District. Here is a picture of Jane Conley and Monica Wilson accepting the award from Bob Nichols.

Robin Clark of Greenbrier is the President of AGATE and presided over the conference. Patti Thompson of Conway School District was the AGATE Awards Chair

Six of the twelve AGATE Affiliate groups for parents and supporters of gifted education for 2010-11 are from the Arch Ford area. Laura Binz, Russellville School District is the Affiliate Director.
  
The AGATE Board of directors includes Jane Conley, South Conway County School District, who is the Secondary Teacher Representative, and Polly Bakker is the AGATE Emeritus Chair. Polly was also honored on her retirement by the group.Here's Polly accepting her award.

Arch Ford Education Service Cooperative Elementary Regional Quiz Bowls

After being snowed out on February 11th, on Friday, February 25, 2011 four Quiz Bowl Tournaments were held at Heber Springs, Russellville, Dover, and Western Yell County.

The tournament directors did a splendid job in setting up and conducting the tournaments. Special thanks to Amanda Brogdon, Laura Binz, Teresa Shatwell, and Dana Sumter. 

The two top teams in each regional tournament play in the finals at Greenbrier on Friday, March 4th. Robin Clark is the tournament director for the finals.

Heber Springs tournament: Heber Springs and West Side Greers Ferry

Russellville: Russellville Middle School and Vilonia

Arch Ford Education Service Cooperative Elementary Quiz Bowl Finals

The finals of the Arch Ford Elementary Quiz Bowl competition were held on Friday, March 4, 2011 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Wooster. Robin Clark was the tournament director for the competition and a special thanks goes out to her and to her team of volunteers for a great day. Following a day of exciting competition, the first place team was from Ruth Doyle Intermediate School from the Conway School District and coached by Julie Haynes. Simon Intermediate School, coached by Bubba Corbitt, from the Conway School District finished second. Russellville Middle School, coached by Leslie Boles, finished third. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and parents on a great tournament.

Destination ImagiNation

Award 2   Congratulations to the Destination ImagiNation teams from Greenbrier and Conway who won in the State competition on Saturday, April 2nd. The teams will be traveling to Nashville for global competition in Knoxville, Tenneesee.


18th Annual Arch Ford Chess Tournament Chess

A field of 50 students, plus coaches, and parents gathered on Monday, May 2nd for the competition. Mr. Don Wilkerson served as Chess Master and Mr. John Birdsong was the Scorekeeper. The 6th grade winners were 3rd Place-Joseph Owen, Shirley; 2nd Place-Mason Keeling, Clinton; and 1st Place-Joe Coker, Conway. 5th Grade Winners were 3rd Place-Ethan Mentz, Western Yell; 2nd Place-Nate Pack, Greenbrier; and 1st Place-Cole Bateman, Conway.
